This is a graffiti painting by Banksy done in 2008 and it is often referred to as "Umbrella Girl". It is located on St. Claude Avenue at Kerlerec Street in Marigny, New Orleans. It was painted on a wall with spray paint. It features a girl and her umbrella with rain pouring own around her from inside the umbrella. The only colors used in this graffiti painting are black, white, and different shades of grey, giving it a dark aesthetic. Banksy's meaning behind this piece is about a young girl who relied on her umbrella for protection, but discovered that the umbrella itself was the source of the rain. This means that sometimes the things you rely on to protect you might be doing you more harm than good, and might be the source of what you're trying to protect yourself from in the first place. It is a meaning that a lot of people, myself included, can relate to. This graffiti painting really shows Banksy's style well and it is evident that he used his own techniques to get the exact image that he desired. All parts of this piece of artwork are interrelated in some way and it definitely expresses a strong meaning. I am moved by this piece and it is one of my favorite graffiti paintings by Banksy. I like it because of its meaning and its dark aesthetic.
